    Ignio and Sector

    April 27, 2013 by Orgodemir27

Sector twisted the small knife about in his hand, his flat demeanor tinged slightly with an air of superiority. He sharpened the blade idly; the light in the moist, deep room was dim, produced by a few candles and an old magicked object or two hidden away behind the stacks of jars and bones. “Only a fool would have fallen for that,” he said to the figure lying behind him.

“Most certainly. You can do much better,” Rinzler said dryly, calmly tied to a table, bereft of cloth and cover.

Sector’s eyes narrowed slightly, but he maintained composure. “You now admit your foolishness?”

“Tch, not at all. If only a fool would fall for your idea, and I’m here, and we both know I’m not a fool, then the reason would be…”

“The reason is your own stupidity, y…

“Sir, I think this man is beyond our healer’s assistance…

“Yes, he’s dead. Congratulations, you pass the introduction to medicine course.”

    “Then…I’m afraid I don’t understand…”

“Here’s a scroll of Raise Dead, here’s a hundred for your healer’s time. I sincerely hope you can figure out the rest.”

“OH. Oh, yes, bring him in here...Might I ask, how did he die? There are no marks on his body, he does not appear to have fallen from illness…”

“That’s not your concern.” “Who is he?” “That’s not your concern either. Just get the healer. I have other things to do today.” “Um, yes, yes right away.”

    Ugh. Backwater towns...

An elderly man, clothed in plain brown robes, placed the piece of parchment he was reading from gently atop the corpse lain across the bed …

“Ballantino and I will confront Vargas. I ask that you all concentrate instead on his army.”

Of course. Erevis and Gorgoroth and I are here to support her, but this is Alejandra's fight in the end. Still, “I won't exclude him from the area of my magic,” I say. I won't go out of my way to avoid weakening him.

    She nods.

“And I know you'll be piled with all the protective magic we can give you,” I continue, “But if it's not enough, if you fall, Alejandra, I'm going to put myself between him and Ballantino. I don't want either of you arguing.” Both of them agree to this immediately. I am still not sure Ballantino will remember, if he does see Alejandra fall. Even after the chimera took six separate bites out of her, after he lost…

Takes place between Hammer 24th and 29th

    ~

It is cloudy and cold when Alyenna and I set out for the forest, but at least the blizzard has stopped, and I do not see another storm coming for at least six or seven days. Any other student, I would keep until the spring when the wilds are gentler, but Aly is an unusually skilled woodswoman, and she wants to leave to go to Alsea.

We leave quietly. Aly does not want the other initiates making a fuss over her. We leave only one set of tracks. Zuni's boots and my own soft step carry us over the surface of the snow, leaving no trace as we walk at Aly's side.

When we reach the forest itself, we pause. I don the shape I have already chosen for this journey, the same one I took after the Battle of Willowda…

these were my ways of saying goodbye

(or: the allegory of the cave)

He is a picture of mature intelligence and youthful anger: curly brown hair damp with sweat, brown eyes dark with dismay, shaking slightly. She is the opposite – violet eyes bright but cold, standing as tall and proud as her twelve years would allow.

(And she is a half-elf, so she appears to be about eight, as humans measure time. It doesn’t help her cause.)

“You can’t leave,” he says. He is fifteen, and about to be married.

“Than what do you think I’m doing right now?” She moves towards the town gate, but he moves into her way. “You can’t stop me, Norr. Nobody can stop me.”

He steps forward, to her, and brushes the hair away from her face. There are tears in her eyes. “Ruthea.”…

    Broken Glass

    July 20, 2012 by Orgodemir27

This takes place on the night of Kythorn 5th, after returning from the Cathedral.

The night air was warm, and the stars illuminated the grasses of the fields. Not many people came out this far, not except the druids, but it was late and they had jobs, families, things that required sleep. The wind whistled gently by, ruffling the grass and his hair as he stared at the small piece of glass, twisting it about in his fingertips as the moon reflected off of its violet facets.

Her handwriting was even, but rushed and unkempt; the style of someone who had been taught proper penmanship a thousand times, but still couldn't be made to care about it. ‘Bring this with you, if you go out beyond the wall. All I ask is that you return it when you are done…

She is in the wild again, and I am not with her. Instead I am guarding the hatchling. From what? The things with teeth and claws are out there, where Jura is. She doesn't want me there. She doesn't want me. She has abandoned me. Unforgivable.

The hatchling puts a hand behind my frill. “No, this way!” she says. I turn and drive my horns into her. She dies easily, this weak thing keeping me from Jura. I look down at the tiny bleeding body I was supposed to keep safe, and feel wrong. But it was also wrong for Jura to leave me alone.

I run for the wall. Jura is outside, and I must find her. The gate is open. The people who find food outside are going through. I swing my head and they get out of my way quickly.

Jura is not at the druid place. I do…

In the morning I try to show no sign of my nightmare. It's nothing, just another fear hiding in the back of my mind, along with that old guilt from leaving my family over such a little thing. None of it will do any good right now. We have enough to worry about, looking for the Cinder Man.

Still he eludes us. Around midday, we see a ball of fire tearing across the desert. It appears to be some kind of creature, but is unresponsive. We follow it to an oasis and discover to our surprise a meeting of genies, Djinn of Djinn included. I notice that although the genies of air, earth, and fire are represented here, water is missing. I wonder if the imbalance has anything to do with the dryness of the desert, and doubly so when Djinn mentions Rathb…

Shall We Write Us Into the Dust?

“One for the baby,” Ruthea says, ripping a piece of paper and tossing it into the fire. “And one for the fire.” She rips another piece of paper off, and tosses it in. The little campfire spits sparks into the night air, dancing alongside snowflakes. “One for the bride on the – ah, fuck it.” She tosses the entire rest of the letter in. “Damn it all.”

(That’s not, you suspect, how the rhyme is supposed to end.)

If you’d followed her since she’d first moved into town, you’d have noticed that of late she’s looking a different sort of ill – the grimy thing that used to cut purses is now looking taller and more angular, severe, a little more certain, a little more uncertain. She po…

...But what does it mean? It has to mean something. I know it has to possess internal meaning, else she wouldn’t have defended it so vehemently without provocation earlier, but I don’t know what that is either. Its magical properties are reminiscent of a bonded object, but she’s certainly no wizard, so it mustn’t be bonded to her, so why would she have it? Logistically, it could only be a gift or stolen, and really I can’t deny either possibility; the former would make more sense as to her attachment to it, but there are more than a handful of reasons to protect something stolen as well, and she rather fancied herself as a gem thief when she first arrived. There are honestly too many reasons, and I don’t have enough information to narrow i…

Don’t you see that it’s better that they’re dead? How much safer and easier it is with the lot of them gone?

Ugh, the audacity of that statement is mind-boggling. Better, that you nearly eradicated a local species? Better, that a group of intelligent beings was murdered en-masse after they had already been driven from their homes by another group of beings only concerned with fighting and border disputes? Yes, they were invasive, but I have yet to see or hear of any intelligent non-invasive creatures. I wonder if those are related; likely, as intelligence would almost certainly have to be linked to the desire to control your surrounding environment, which leads to shelter construction and farming, or at the very least systematic hunting. Just because I'm not watching them, talking back to every little thing that I'm obviously not a part of, does everyone really think that I'm not there? The alternative is no better. Either I say nothing, and within hours they talk about me like I'm not here, or I do talk, and within the hour everyone is telling me to shut up. Unless I'm talking about something they happen to be interested in, but that’s also fleeting. I don’t recall if I came to a definite conclusion; is it related to their depth of knowledge, their strength of interest, or is there just a flat limit to the amount a single person can listen to about a single topic? Gorgoroth, Enrique, and I are sitting in the Boar & Thistle discussing the third scroll of Fahz Murb when Alejandra stops by our table. Perhaps something to do with the military. Briefing in the Guild Hall. Noemia and Leao are guarding the meeting room entrance, and I feel increasingly apprehensive. Good things are rarely said behind closed doors.

    Tusks

    February 28, 2012 by KateStrange

Note: This information is pending the Trahan stamp of approval and should at this point be considered fanon.

    ~

Orc tribes are not as uniform as the hobgoblin legions, but some cultural constants remain. Orc tusks are one such object. The tusks are believed to contain the strength of the person. A broken tusk is seen to be as serious an injury as a lost limb, and saying that an orc has no tusks is a grave insult.

A person who possesses a tusk is said to be able to control the tusk's owner, a belief which sometimes leads to the removal of an enemy's tusks both to gain power over them and as a form of humiliation. Lost tusks are usually hidden, carefully protected, or ritually consumed. The fermented beverage Udruk, made with blood, boar's milk,…

When Alejandra brought her family to Willowdale, Jura almost immediately struck up a friendship with Noemia. With Alejandra's blessing, Jura became Noemia's mestre and teacher, introducing her to druidic practice and sharpening her healing and survival skills. In Hammer, Alejandra, Noemia, Ballantino, and Jura decided that Noemia would undergo training for the final circle of druidic practice. Described here is a summary of key lessons both before and after Noemia begins advanced training.

    1. Attack, Defense, and Intent. This lesson followed Noemia's ill-advised decision to draw a weapon on Halstein with the intent of defending Rahzer'ok. Jura realized that Noemia had not grasped the fine distinction between an offensive and defensive fight. S…

The snow is deep and I walk slowly to my meditation place sheltered in the trees. I lay down the contents of my spirit bag and attune to each in turn.

When I am finished and grounded, the first hint of dawn is in the sky. I pass by the Firewalkers, huddled around their stove. Zuni is just beginning to stir in the stables. She mumbles as I wipe out bits of dirt from behind her frill, then accepts a carrot and allows me to help her into her booties. We stroll through the town as the sun rises. The smell of baking bread seeps into the cold air. One voice after another rises …

    Trial

    January 28, 2012 by KateStrange

We knew this was coming. The closing of the Battle of Willowdale, at least in the eyes of the law. Alejandra has attempted to bring the prisoners around, and I have assisted. I have some experience in redemption, but there is a difference between coaxing a feral gnoll into a kinder pack and breaking through the shells of killers trained to give no mercy and expect none. I don't know if we can save them, from the noose or from themselves, but we will try.

Ru seems very attached to the girl. Alejandra, too. She is the youngest, and not as far gone.

At the trial, I speak of what I know: Rahzer'ok, and the value of sparing a life. Not as passionate as the others' words, but true enough. I can only hope that a few of the townsfolk listening woke …

    Norr Kiernan

    January 17, 2012 by Kanthia

Norr Kiernan (né Lyonus) is Ruthea’s brother-in-law and childhood friend. A talented and inquisitive wizard, he works as a librarian, anthropologist, enchanter, and dabbles in alchemy alongside his familiar, a barn owl named Tina. After five years of marriage he has become father to four children: Kyria (a girl), Jarrod (a boy), Nerissa (a girl), and Rain (a newborn boy).

The youngest of three children, Norr’s childhood was one of studying and looking after his household, while his elder brother and elder sister studied in New Luxburg. He met Fiona while delivering a package to the Kiernan household, and later met Ruthea while running errands in the town market. The two became fast friends, Norr enjoying her free-spirited belligerence and t…

    Lessons from the Herd

    December 5, 2011 by KateStrange

My first memory is of huddling in the centre of a ring of Ceratops while my family fought with brigands outside. A solid wall of muscle and horn protecting me and the other children. This is when I learned that when danger comes, you pull closer together.

Civilized people look down on the herd. They see tame, well-controlled masses of cattle and assume that all such creatures are slow and stupid. But my family knows the free-roaming Ceratops. In the search for fresh stock, we have chased them down, separated the young ones who fall behind, and taken off with our prizes before the rest of the herd could turn and bear down on us with horrible vengeance. I have seen the broken body of one young man unfortunate enough to fall in their path. Pro…

Noticed Orgodemir removed the "NPC" category from Julio, which seems fair given that he hasn't actually appeared as a character and the "Backstory" category is sufficient. However, the grounds for this change confused me. "Does not meet requirements for NPC (was never DM controlled)"

Though there was originally a clear PC/NPC distinction, there are now several supporting characters currently listed as NPCs who have never been DM controlled: Alyenna, Ballantino, Leão, Noemia, and as far as I'm aware Nanny Ogg. I note that all but one of these characters are considered "Followers," with Nanny being a Retired PC (though the PC category was removed due to her inactivity). Therefore:

    Hey all

Just a quick note: Enrique is more than willing to help out his comrades in arms - so he's willing to produce gunpowder weapons at cost for any gunslingers that approach him, and help out anybody who wants to take the amateur gunslinger feat or take gunslinger weapons. Within reason, he can produce anything on the firearms page, plus maintanence equipment; you might have to wait a couple of days if your chosen weapon is spectacularly complicated.

    Greetings, Pathfinders.

Ru has taken up the project of making a Battle of Willowdale commemorative monument. It will be located near the Graveyard (pending Erevis' okay) and include two components:

    - A small garden with flowers in a variety of colours. Walkways, small pools and trees may also be incorporated when spring comes, to make the space more useable.

    - In the centre of the garden, a monument (10 x 10 foot base, 15 feet tall) to the fallen. It will somewhat resemble the Fraserburgh War Memorial, though Justice (the woman) would be standing and closer in size to Valour (the man), with town citizens chosen by lottery to be the models for Justice and Valour. The monument would be sitting on a limestone base carved with an inscription hono…

I heard people talking about this the other day and I think it's a fantastic idea! For those of you who haven't had extensive experience in fandom, a Fan Soundtrack is a compilation of songs that have lyrics or music that evoke your character or an event. Some people also call them 'theme songs'.

Anyways, is anyone interested in doing this? I know Gorgoroth already has a theme song, and through the grapevine I've heard that Alejandra's mun might have one in mind as well. Ru's theme, incidentally, is Bulletproof .

It is written in a script with many flourishes, indicating someone with training in penmanship. As the letter goes on, however, the writing becomes more and more rushed.

Ruthea!!!!! I do hope this letter arrives safely! Your father and mother and I and my husband and our children have been so very very very worried about your safety!! Well, I was not as worried about your safety, as I always knew that you would be fine on your own -- you always were the most able to look after yourself, and I always told myself that you would be fine by yourself. The Pathfinders discuss bringing her back in a new and younger body, but her spirit insists that she must not suddenly become younger than her husband and children. In the end, Alejandra sings her awake.

It seems like we'll be invaded by hobgoblins within the week, and I want to see how it all looks at the end. Give your husband my regards, and your children, if you have any. Also to mother and fathe her husband as well. Do not come looking for me. I can look after myself.

The Expedition Log is distinct from the Quests forum in that it contains details about the events of a particular Pathfinder session, while the Quest log contains the key points relating to a running quest over several sessions. While the rest of the wiki is organized by topic, the Expedition Log is organized by date. This will bring together information about a session - in-game dates, major events, and participating Pathfinders - for easy reference. This will help interested players who have missed a session or two to brush up on any interesting events without sifting through the recently edited pages. It will also allow us to have a master collection of dates and names of participating Pathfinders.

This one is pretty short, but I don't think it's been explicitly stated. Some pages have a header for Quests, under which is a bullet point that directly links to the appropriate quest. Basically, the pages that should get those are:

    • People who have given the quest, and are obstensibly the person granting the completion reward (eg. if Someone wants you to do something, Someone's page should have a link)
    • People who are the target of a quest, who are integral to its completion (eg. if the quest is to find Guy, then Guy's page should have a link)
    • Locations that are utterly tied to the quest's completion (eg. if the quest is to explore The Place, then The Place's page should have a link. If it is to find Guy, last seen at Guy's House, then Guy's …

Since the beginning of the game, the problem with a XP lag for players who can't attend as often as they'd like has been an issue. Now that we have 1d4 players who are either at level 7 or in spitting range of it, I'm looking for ideas on how to curb this. Starting new characters at lowest current PC level and arbitrarily giving XP seems like a cop-out so I think it's time for a new solution.

The easiest idea is to make some form of absentee XP of 50% per session or so, but this can get confusing with players trying to remember what sessions that they do and do not receive absentee xp for (especially in such a game), so my solution is to have a "pace car" for XP.

Basically, there is a baseline XP that will be going up constantly as the world…

Possibly my most tricky style guide yet, this installment pertains to word choice and writing style. Even I'm aware that this is a dicey topic and very subjective, but if anyone has some suggestions, please throw them in the comments!

First off, some really basic tips: flavour text (the italicized text found at the beginning of region, landmark, Willowdale, PC and NPC pages) should be in second person, while everything else should be in third person. Spelling and grammar should be decent, but hey, we all know there's no spell checker and we have at least 3 people meticulously going through pages for spelling anyways, so don't sweat it.

Some more nit-picky things: capitalize 'Pathfinders' when using it to refer to a group containing one or mo…

Yet another installment of the Style Series! I'm sure you're all thrilled. Without further ado, here's the pattern that's been eked out for page formatting in general:

Spacing: There is no indenting for new paragraphs, but each new paragraph starts on a new line (one hit of "enter"). New sections, prefaced by a header, have a line of space between the previous paragraph and the header (two hits of "enter").

Pictures: Pictures are left-aligned, and should be placed at the beginning. In other words, insert them as the first object in the body of text. Photo captions should have punctuation, and while they should be either all italicized or all normal, we seem to have about 50/50 at the moment, so it doesn't really matter.

    Flavour Text: Flavour …

Everyone beware! I have much time on my hands, and so anyone or thing I can't find a decent picture for on Google will eventually get a ridiculous low-budget chibi.

    You've been warned!

Ok, categories are starting to run rampant, so can we take a minute to get them organized?

    Places Pertinant to Exploration

    • Regions: large explorable areas beyond the wall within Laurasia
    • Landmarks: smaller locations of note, found within Regions
    • Willowdale: any person or place within the base town of Willowdale
    • Geography: any continent or huge geographical area that concievably holds regions
    • Civilization: any place or cultural detail that currently exists within the Laurasian Wall

    Landmark-specific Categories

    • Region*: each landmark is to be categorized with the region that it exists within
    • Shrines: the 'shrine' landmarks contain alters that Pathfinders can be blessed from, should they make an offering

People, Animals and other Living Things

    • PCs: any …

    WOOOOOO

August 10, 2011 by Mode Wondershot

This is awesome, getting to write for a wiki on a work of fiction established by a friend.

I have to be extra careful, though, because I got a reprimand from work for being asleep at my desk, so I'm not going to stay up all night linking pages and the like.

    Just on weekends.

I'll add mostly to Alejandra's page, as she is, naturally, the one thing in this game I know most about. Other edits will be performed as I see noteworthy things happen.

I will also correct errors in grammar and spelling as I see them, because that is what I do.

    Cheers!

Alright! I think now we are at the point where we, or at least the four of us, have made significant enough progress that we are going to be more heavily building off of each others work now, instead of making random, as-yet unrelated pages. So, can we make some basic style outlines to keep things consistent, in terms of page content/categorization? Otherwise I go bonky, because I'm a sorting nut.

Basically, we've got what? People, places and things. People are either NPCs or PCs. Places are either Regions, Landmarks or places in Willowdale. Things...well, we don't really have any things right now, other then card items and animals.

So, can we keep all information regarding places and people seperate? If you want to talk about a Landmark (wh…

I am sad that the achievement system is such that I get rewarded less for doing longer, larger edits as opposed to many minor edits. I have not done significantly less work than ZVM_achi!

That is why I am posting this blog: to both condemn the recognition system, and simultaniously get recognition points for writing a blog post. Is it irony? Who knows!

I'm finding that I'm not always sure who's who in this wiki. Our usernames and photos aren't always identifiable without familiarity with others' general online identity. It's sometimes easy to figure out who a person is by their edits (for example, only edits their own character page), but is not obvious in all cases. So, if you'd like to be identifiable, post links to your PCs on your contributer pages and links to your contributor pages on your PC pages. If you don't care, you don't have to bother. But making those links will allow others from Willowdale to easily identify you, without giving any personal information to the web at large.
